What has this present Government really done?

 
 

At present I am baffled as to how the situation concerning the SIA "secret files" has been dealt with by this present government. The Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar made a big show in calling out the names of the individuals whose phones were illegally wire-tapped, throwing the nation into widespread debate. Since then she has not been able to account for any such files, giving the public the excuse that she simply doesn't know where the files are. To be plain, such an excuse simply isn't good enough and we the public should not accept an excuse so ridiculous. Mr. Volney was quoted as saying that two Israeli men destroyed the files and the Prime Minister in her capacity as the Head of the National Security Council cannot even affirm or deny such a statement because she clearly does not know what is going on. In numerous instances it has seemed that the present government is in complete chaos. Decisions made by Minister's are being over-turned (namely Jack Warner) for the proclaimed purpose of transparency while so-called "secret files" cannot be accounted for by the Head of the National Security Council and Prime Minister of this country! In addition it has recently been said that the Attorney General Anand Ramlogan has/had seen excerpts of the "secret files." The Prime Minister says she does not know where the files are, the Minister of Justice claims that two Israeli men destroyed the files, and the Attorney General says that he has seen excerpts of the files! The question needs to be asked what is going on within the government of Trinidad and Tobago? Is it that the anti Manning/PNM sentiment is so strong that the public is allowing this Peoples Partnership to get away with anything? It is time that we as Trinbagonians demand quality representation NOW! Call your member for Parliament and question him/her concerning issues! Don't be afraid, that's their job, to represent you! Go ahead make that call or go straight to the office and tell them, that when next they go in Parliament to voice your concerns!

Put out your bucket!

This article is being written mainly because of the economic times in which the world is presently immersed. Recently I have read numerous articles which have stressed the progress of the US financial recovery, The National Bureau of Economic Research has stated that the economic recession which began in December 2007 had come to its end by June 2009 and at present (December 17, 2010) the US economy is in its re- building phase. Such revelations may be deceiving due to the high level of unemployment averaged to be at 17.5 percent when all factors are taken into consideration (part time workers and individuals who have stopped seeking work). The Chairman of the US Federal Reserve, Ben Bernanke has seen it necessary to pump more money into the United States Economy to keep it afloat, money that the United States clearly does not have and frankly is backed by nothing. The rest of the world assume and hope that the United States, because of its great productive power can clear its debt in some way, but a sober look at the figures would clearly show otherwise. At present any more money used by the Federal Reserve would simply be paper backed by nothing. As my father use to say, it seems that this whole money (or rather currency) thing is an entire "concoction"; meaning that it is a set up, something unnecessarily devised. If one understands the psyche of the African West Indian man you may realize that in most cases he is eager to cry oppression and question events in needless cases but I think that this time my father may be on to something (my father being an African West Indian) and Americans should cry out against the oppression of which they are clearly suffering.

    In Bernanke's defense some historians and economists have criticized the lack of action by the Federal Reserve in the 1929 Great Depression attributing the length of the depression to the Federal Reserve's inaction. In the recession of 2008 the Federal Reserve have done simply the opposite, silencing one side of critics and arousing another group who are now raising questions concerning American dept. In the recession of 2008 the Federal Reserve spent over 3 trillion dollars in an attempt to prevent a depression and so far it has worked but this has resulted in an enormous US dept increase.

    Now it should be noted that the United States of America has become the land of real opportunity for shrewd and cunning investors. At present, opportunities have opened up that were never before present. Prices of real estate in states like Detroit and Cleveland are at extreme lows and investors now have the opportunity to capitalize on such opportunities. The landscape of real estate holders and land owners could change drastically in America during this time of uncertainty.

    When it is raining gold, don't run for shelter instead put out a bucket! At present stock prices are low and real estate prices are low and ironically people are afraid to invest in either. If you have access to cash don't hesitate to invest. It would be very rare to find banks that are willing to lend at this point in time so for those who don't have cash available, it would be difficult. But these are the times in which individuals are to capitalize upon although at a moments glance things may seem unstable.

    

 

Trouble throughout the globe

Today I stayed home from school, spending most of my time reading through the secret cables published by Wikileaks over the weekend and throughout both yesterday and today. The cables published reveal messages sent by American embassies throughout the World and the US State Department. For a young fellah like me, who in all honestly may not fully comprehend the magnitude of such a security breach and the importance of the information written within those documents it was truly a unique experience reading through the cables.

    Although many of the ,newspapers (New York Times, Der Spiegel, UK guardian) throughout the world have reported on the issue, it is a unique experience when one goes through the information themselves. It must be firstly said that American diplomats are brilliant observers. Their reporting of information is well detailed and they give full, clear descriptions of scenes and events; it's as if reading a novel. They write in a frank manner, not hesitating to give full character assessments of individuals no matter who they are. All the cables end with the last names of the individual who wrote them, for example any cable coming out of the Secretary of State Department ended with CLINTON; in addition some noted that other relevant personnel cleared the cable.

    Today I spent hours upon hours reading, downloading and assessing the cables, stopping ever so often to ask myself if this is a dream. The situation at present with regards to world political affairs looks like a scene from the TV show 24. This right now… as I write this blog (30^th Nov. 2010) is history in the making. My grandmother keeps telling me to go to bed but I'm too excited. Such events would rarely take place again.

    Wikileaks has a twitter account and they have reported numerous times that they have been experiencing Cyber attacks on their website, and in verification of this, one could attest that the site has both slowed down and has begun to give some technical difficulties but it still continues to operate, uploading approximately 80 new secret cable files daily. Wikileaks have claimed that they have in their possession 251,287 secret cables which they would release periodically; only 291 have been released thus far.    

    One might argue that the information released within the cables is mere gossip and to an extent such an assessment might actually be accurate, but within these cables information which may have never scene the public sphere is now accessible to all. Information concerning world affairs which frankly I think we all have the right to see because we are all citizens of the world. Period. It may sound simplistic and juvenile but that's how its suppose to be. Politics is suppose to be understood by the most incompetent of persons. That why it's called public affairs! It's the affairs of the public! No secrets in public office because it's public business. If individuals wish to have secrets it would simply be uncovered like the present revelations on Wikileaks. The people hold the power, not the world political leaders. People are not to be treated like invalids. Politicians are there to serve. They are the employees of the people placed in office to serve the general will of the public and not special interest groups or their own personal interest. In radical Capitalist societies like that of the United States, we may some times forget that although Barack Obama may be considered a celebrity he is still an employee of each American Citizen. He is paid to serve the 400 million people of America and not the BANKS!

    Support Wikileaks because it is fighting against injustice and secrecy. President Kennedy of the United States initiated a fight against secrecy of all forms along with many other great men of the past. It is your turn! Support Wikileaks in any way possible, even if it is by just reading the cables to become informed!

The 1960s was a time in which many Caribbean nations achieved their independence. Attempts at regional integration had failed with the dismantling of the West Indian Federation and thus individual independence for countries throughout the region was sought.

    Trinidad and Tobago received its independence from Britain under the leadership of Dr. Eric Williams and the Peoples National Movement on August 31st of 1962. A day signaling the end of an oppressive era while ushering in the birth of a new nation. It would be considered safe to think that independence from Britain was not pursued for the main reason of being trendy or for the purpose of "fitting in" with most of the world but rather for the people of Trinidad and Tobago to discover our own identity, understand our own history, formulate our own culture and be proud in our own national individuality.

    It has been forty eight years since the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago came into existence and the question needs to be asked, Is Trinidad and Tobago really Independent? Could Trinidad and Tobago sustain itself?

    Economically, T&T is not only dependent on foreign nations for its manufactured goods but for basic necessities like food. According to one government minister the food import bill of T&T is three billion dollars. It is clear that T&T's population cannot be sustained without imported food. If a nation cannot sustain its population's most basic necessity, then the harsh reality is that the nation is not independent but rather dependant. An independent nation must be able to stand on its own two feet when necessary, free from any restrictions which would be imposed when one nation is dependant upon another.

    Some may senselessly argue that by varying the countries from whom we import would limit our dependency on a sole foreign nation, this could only be considered a temporary solution if considered at all. No leader who truly believes in Trinidad and Tobago as an independent nation would support such a policy. Citizens of Trinidad and Tobago must all band together and proclaim in the words of Eric Williams "Massa Day Done." Government must firstly be prepared to invest handsomely in local industries and in turn citizens must be willing to purchase local goods and give such goods first preference to any other. Local manufacturers should therefore ensure that they produce high quality goods that rival that of any other nation in the world.

    Additionally, the government should do everything in its power to arouse much greater interest in public affairs. It is the duty of every individual to contribute in some way to the building of this GREAT nation. Although we are small, as an independent state Trinidad and Tobago is to be considered as an equal to all the other states of the world. The following is a call made by Prime Minister Eric Williams on August 31^st, 1962, the first day of National Independence:

"You (Trinbagonians) are on your own in a big world, in which you are one of many nations, some small, some medium size, some large. You are nobody's boss and nobody is your boss…What use would you make of your independence? Whatever the challenge that faces you, from whatever quarter, place always first the national interest and the national cause. The strength of the nation depends on the strength of its citizens. Our National Anthem invokes God's Blessings on our Nation, in response to those thousands of citizens of all faiths who demanded God's protection on our Constitution. Let us then as a Nation so conduct ourselves as to be able always to say in those noblest and inspiring words of St. Paul, By the Grace of God we as a people are what we are, and his Grace in us hath not been void."

    We've all waited four long years for another display of the beautiful game on the World's greatest footballing stage, the FIFA World Cup. For the first time in history the continent of Africa has been given the opportunity to host the worlds' single most popular event. Thirty two of the world's best teams were separated into eight groups with the four teams of each group playing against each other.

    The competition began with the South American champions Brazil as favorites along with their fierce rivals Argentina, a team that boasted of the world's best player Lionel Messi and an array of talented attacking players in such abundance that it was a struggle for Coach Diego Maradona to find space in his team roster. The England team was also considered another favorite due to their dominating performances during the World Cup qualifying rounds. Spain as Champions of Europe had to be recognized as a strong force and the determination and discipline of the German team was not to be over-looked. Many of the other teams participating in the World Cup consisted of very talented individual players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogbar, Patrice Evra, Frank Ribery, Blanco, Pirlo and many others, but the teams which these players played for either lacked unity, discipline or simply won't good enough on match day to be serious contenders for the World Cup. Some teams like the Netherlands were an exception. It was difficult for one to predict how they would perform when considering their disappointing World Cup history. Although the Netherland team consisted of remarkable talents like Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben their team chemistry was questionable.

    The opening match of the tournament featured CONCACAF giant Mexico against the host nation South Africa. This match ended in a 1-1 draw but was no help to the South African cause mainly because they were knocked out of the competition by the end of the group stages. Mexico was unable to challenge the mighty Argentineans and a 3-1 defeat clearly showed the superiority of the Argentinean outfit and sent the Mexicans home.

    The World Cup clearly showed many football fans that the gap between teams was no longer as large as before. Highly rated teams like Spain, Germany, Italy and France were all stunned by teams that were widely considered inferior to them in talent and quality. Spain and Germany were defeated 1-0 by Switzerland and Serbia respectively, while the finalists of the 2006 World Cup, France and Italy were both knocked out of the competition within the group stages.

    All the South American teams that had qualified for the World Cup were able to progress outside of the group stages. For many football fans it was beginning to seem that the tide had turned from European domination to South American domination of the football world. The odds were already in favor of a South American team winning the World Cup. But this would not be easy. Brazil matched up against Chile in the round of 16 and defeated the Chileans 3-0, thus lowering the possibility of the title returning to the South American continent but with the two South American giants of Argentina and Brazil still in the contest, there was hope for South American supporters.

    The Brazilians were then defeated by a Netherland team that simply refused to give up. After going one goal down the Netherland team grinded their way back into the game and were able to force a mistake from Brazilian keeper Julio Cesar. Poor marking by the Brazilian defenders then allowed Wesley Sneijder to nab a header into the back of the net that put his team into the World Cup semi finals.

The Argentineans played a German team that had already thrashed an out of form English side 4-1. The youth and discipline of the German team were being praised by football fans all around the world but the attacking might of the Argentineans had to be considered. The Argentineans would eventually be embarrassed by a German team that refused to hold back. The team pushed forward relentlessly and was able to dismantle a weak Argentinean defense. Disappointment flooded the South American continent and many more football fans around the world. Neither the Samba boys nor the star studded Argentinean team were able to deliver and they would have to wait until 2014, when the World Cup tournament would take place in Brazil.

    The semi finals saw three European teams in the Netherlands, Spain, Germany and one South American team in Uruguay. The Netherlands were able to defeat the Uruguayan outfit rather convincingly, although the score-line of 3-2 may have given the impression of a close fight. The Spaniards were then able to scrape another one nil win against a disappointing German team which had to settle for a third place match against Uruguay. Germany defeated Uruguay in the runner-up play-off and for the second consecutive World Cup they had to settle for a third place finish.

    The final match between Spain and the Netherlands guaranteed that for the first time in their footballing history one of these nations would be crowned World Cup Champions. This created an excitement among football fans through-out the world even if they were supporters of teams that were already out of the tournament.

    The game went goal-less for a full 90 minutes and was forced into extra time with Spain having more of the ball possession and greater chances on goal but the Netherland striker Arjen Robben had two clear opportunities, one-on-one with goal keeper Casillas and failed to deposit the ball into the back of the net. He lived to regret his missed opportunities in the 116^th minute of the game when Andres Iniesta slammed the ball pass Stekelenburg, the Netherland goal keeper.

    For the first time in their history Spain had won the World Cup. They also at present hold the European title, thus making them the greatest Spanish team in history and the best team on the planet.

    The World Cup proved to be a successful experience for the nation of South Africa. It not only produced exciting football moments but also gave world-wide exposure to the African continent and silenced those who criticized or questioned the ability of the South Africans to host the World Cup. The world was exposed to many aspects of South African footballing culture most in particular the vuvuzela. This World Cup would never be forgotten.

After the call by Prime Minister Patrick Manning for Parliament to be dissolved on Thursday 8^th April 2010 and his eventual announcement of the May 24^th Election Day, it was only a matter of time before the customary political 'banta' begun.

The United National Congress, only recently coming out of an internal election filled with controversy, was in a state of uncertainty when the election date was announced. Internal conflict between members of the party and the nation-wide discontent with Basdeo Panday opened the way for a new leader in the form of Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Throughout the nation it was seen fit by various influential individuals and members of the opposing PNM to commend Persad-Bissessar on becoming the first female political leader of a major party. Some supporters even saw it fit to begin calling Persad-Bissessar the future Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, but to any sensible individual it would take much more than an individual's gender to secure a victory in a general election.

On the national front, the government consisting of the Peoples National Movement were under accumulating pressure by the Opposition party and the public with regard to questions of corruption being raised against UDeCOTT (Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago) and its chairman John Calder Hart.

John Calder Hart, an economist by profession was hired in the year 1986 by the government of Trinidad and Tobago for the purpose of setting up The Home Mortgage Bank (HMB). In addition to holding the position of Chief Executive Officer at The Home Mortgage Bank (HMB), he was also appointed Chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago Mortgage Finance Company Limited (TTMF), Chairman of the National Insurance Board (NIB) and Chairman of the National Insurance Property Development Company Limited (NIPDEC). Hart was appointed in August 2006 as Executive Chairman of the state owned company UDeCOTT.

John Calder Hart resigned on 6^th March 2010 from all the positions he held due to accusations that he was involved in the awarding of a construction contract to a Malaysian firm worth over TT$360 million in which he had family connections. Documented evidence was brought forward and if Hart is found guilty, he would be in violation of the Integrity in Public Life Act, which forbids individuals from participating in the awarding of contracts if a family connection is present between them and the various groups/companies bidding for the contract.

For the PNM and their bid for re-election, this is a critical blow. Public trust in the party has been lowered greatly and as stated by the controversial Keith Rowley, it is clear that 'corruption is no respecter of political parties.' Due to a lack of proper oversight, UDeCOTT Chairman Calder Hart became a law unto himself. It is necessary for us to understand that Hart's affiliation was not with the Peoples National Movement but with the government of Trinidad and Tobago. At present the PNM does form the government but Hart has been occupying positions on state boards for roughly twenty-four years, including the years of UNC and NAR government. But it is clear that the money of Trinbagonians were put at risk and Patrick Manning as the Prime Minister needs to be held accountable. It does not mean however that the Peoples Coalition is fit to replace the present government.

Some may argue that the era of corruption and controversy has left the UNC with the introduction a new leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Chairman Jack Warner leading the way, but one must think again.

Warner's foreign interests and world-wide connections would certainly be improved if he was to get into any position of power on May 25^th 2010. With all the allegations of corruption and the strong facts to support them, it is a surprise that Jack Warner hasn't been ousted of the political arena; but as many argue, the political arena has proven to be the breeding ground of corrupt personalities, individuals who have developed the unique art of portraying themselves as saviors while raping the treasury of our beloved nation.

Former Chairman of the Scottish Football Association, John Mcbeth, when asked about corruption among high ranking officials in FIFA (International Federation of Football Association) singled out Jack Warner, who he claimed asked him to deposit a check to Warner's personal bank account that was supposed to be sent to the TTFF (Trinidad and Tobago Federation) for a friendly match played in May 2004.

In addition, Warner was also in conflict with players of the Trinidad and Tobago National Football Team with regards to payments from the commercial revenue generated by T&T's participation in the World Cup tournament of 2006. According to Times Online, the TTFF declared that only an approximate TT$15 million was made from the World Cup and the players were entitled to roughly TT$5000. It was later revealed that revenue from the tournament had been approximately TT$150 million and the players were entitled to a much larger sum of money than TT$5000. A UK Sports Dispute Resolution Panel ruled overwhelmingly in favor of the players but Warner made the claim that the players broke a confidentiality agreement therefore he was no longer responsible for paying them the money.

The question needs to be asked, where did the undeclared TT$135 million go? It surely didn't go to the players who so diligently represented T&T in the World Cup and it surely wasn't declared by the TTFF. This is a clear example of the corruption in which Jack Warner is constantly involved in. It could almost be 100% guaranteed that the 13 players involved in the dispute would not be giving their votes to the Peoples Coalition once Jack Warner is associated.

Another issue was also revealed after the FIFA World Cup 2006 that added even greater merit to the widespread claims that Jack Warner is corrupt. FIFA's auditors estimated that Warner's family travel company made more than TT$4.5million on selling World Cup match tickets. A fine was said to have been implemented by FIFA on Warner.

Jack Warner is clearly a political liability for the UNC and the Peoples Coalition. The allegations of corruption revolving around Warner are too great to ignore, but as the May 24^th General Election draws closer they seem to be playing a much lesser role than previously anticipated.

Some of the problems and issues that face both political parties were to an extent highlighted in this article but they should not be used to determine one's vote. They were used as simple examples to show that the individuals and political parties whom we hold in such high esteem are all faulty. One young boy once said that it's a simple choice of voting for the 'lesser evil.' It may sound a bit extreme but the boy has a point. The choice between the PNM and the Peoples Coalition should not be for the party with the more advertisements or 'catchy tunes' but for the party that has proven itself while in government and more convincingly proposes a better future.

The UNC, who is clearly leading the Coalition, did have their opportunity in the years 1996-2001 and the PNM has had their opportunity from 2002-2010, make your comparison.

In conclusion, it is only fair to assess the election battle thus far as of 1:05AM May 18^th 2010 (The time I'm writing this article). The Peoples Coalition seem to be using every piece of information and ounce of energy they could find to make this election a done deal. They have attempted to provide evidence of the Prime Minister's involvement in the building of a church; they have attempted all manner of tactics in order to get Patrick Manning to agree to a debate and have continued to place greater focus on demonizing the PNM and their leader Patrick Manning rather than on issues that affect Trinidad and Tobago.

In addition, it is becoming clearer that most of the media houses within the nation are of the view that the PNM have been in power too long and there is need for a change. Under the guise of being unbiased many of the media houses are being overly harsh on the government and in some instances glorifying the work of the opposition.

With all of this in mind, the Peoples Coalition do seem to have the momentum on their side with endorsements by political heavy-weights like A.N.R. Robinson but the gap may be too large.
